How to make organic baby food: See you next ECO BABY workshop is on December 18th

November 22nd, 2009 | Comments (0)

Common questions on how to make baby food

When can I start to introduce baby food? Around 6 months around the same time your baby can sit up

What type of food? organic is best, fresh in season vegetables or fruits, introducing one type of food at a time every 2 to 3 days to avoid allergy.

How to make my first baby food? Mix a whole grain organic cereal with water or breast milk and a soft fruit or a vegetable ( steamed if its a hard) Important tip make sure it is very water and soft the first times until your baby is used to the different texture.

What foods do I avoid in the first 1 to 2 years of life?
peanuts, fish and shell fish and eggs

Are the Nitrate Levels in Vegetables too high and what is he harm?
Nitrates are natural constituents of plants since they are their main source of nitrogen required for growth.
If high levels are reached in young babies usually less than 6 months methemoglobinemia may occur (a type of anemia)
There are a few things you can do to protect your baby from nitrates.
Nitrates increase with storage time unless frozen.
When using fresh vegetables for your baby food, prepare it as soon as possible.
Freeze extra servings right away or better make small portions.
Nitrate fertilizers are not used on land where produce is grown organically, so the risk of nitrates is much lower with certified organic produce.
Foods that tend to accumulate large amount of nitrate include spinach, beets, cabbage, broccoli, and carrots. Recommendations for home preparation of high nitrate containing foods are: Freeze vegetables immediately after harvest. Do not use vegetables which have been frozen longer than five months. Thaw vegetables no longer than 15 hours at room temperature
Do I need to add salt or sugar on the food?
No salt or sugar and for sure no honey for the first year of life

Remember when introduce the first pure food, your baby has to learn a whole new way of eating dynamics and may splash and spit and spray out the food while making cute faces so don’t just assume that your baby did not like the taste,
you may want to water down the food more or just plain try it again the next meal.
Bon apetite Bebe.

Please email me if you have any questions or comments. Good luck and enjoy.

Baby speech development the first year of life – Dr Bar’s Blog: Children Doctor

April 10th, 2009 | Comments (1)

During these early months, when baby’s brain is developing rapidly, adult participation in even simple activities with young children makes a lasting impression. Get some ideas about what you can do here!

Stimulate his senses
Babies use their senses to take in information. Create a stimulating atmosphere for your child by:

hold baby near your face and say loving things (”I love you,” “You’re so cute,” “What a sweet baby”) and encourage baby to explore your face with her hands.
take your baby to a mirror to see herself and you.
sing favorite songs to baby and use lots of facial expressions.
lay baby on her side. Place a toy to either side and see if baby will be motivated to roll and touch the toy.
remember to hug and cuddle – a lot!
buy or borrow a nursery rhyme book from the library and sing or say the rhymes repeatedly. Babies love repetition.
use wooden spoons and other simple tools to count out rhythmic 1-2, 1-2-3, and 1-2-3-4 patterns. Encourage baby to mimic the beat.
use conversation and single words to help baby label things in daily life (dog, ball, bottle)
put colorful pictures or photos in places where baby spends time (the change table, the bedroom…). Look at photographs of family members, and talk softly about what she is seeing.
babies love to let objects drop and fall. Help baby learn about different sounds and the concept of “down” by providing different objects to drop.
sing silly songs and wiggle baby’s toes and fingers to help baby learn about body parts.
Growing strong
Babies muscles grow strong only when they use them. You can help by:

hold baby while sitting or laying on her back and hold toys or rattles within reach. Encourage baby to hit or touch the toy.
provide baby with some time on his tummy when awake. Place toys, a mirror, or yourself in front of baby to encourage him to keep his head up. This will strengthen back and neck muscles.
Other ways to encourage learning
You can create a stimulating atmosphere and encourage learning by playing with your baby, like with these games below:

use a mirror to show baby his/her face. Call the baby by name. Exaggerate your facial expressions.
play peek-a-boo, hide yourself and objects, then hide and find the baby behind a held-up towel or blanket.
fill a container with cereal or other object that will rattle when you close the lid and shake it. Ask baby what’s “inside” and let baby peek and touch as you name the object. Change the objects as you help baby discover different sounds and objects. Be sure there are no sharp edges on the container.
wiggle baby’s fingers and toes as you tell stories, count or sing songs about each one.
let baby touch toys and other objects as you raise them “up” and let them fall “down.” Then let baby try.
turn off the television.
read picture books aloud, walk outdoors, and let your child experience various sights, sounds and textures.
cuddle, talk in loving tones, and nurture with gentleness.

Children’s Doctor Newport Beach: After Hours Pediatric House Calls:

April 7th, 2009 | Comments (1)

Four reasons to choose a house call as an alternative to the ER or hospital urgent care:

(1) Typically, Dr. Bar will see your child in under an hour. The average wait time at the ER is approximately 4-6 hours, and at a hospital urgent care, only slightly shorter.

(2) Your child will be seen by Dr. Bar a board certified pediatrician . At the ER or hospital urgent care, your child will be seen by a doctor that generally treats adults or most commonly a Physician assistant and then they will ask you to follow up next day with the pediatrician.

(3) Your child will be seen at home in a child-friendly setting. At the ER or hospital urgent care, your child will be amongst ill adults and may be exposed to sick people or trauma scenes that may frighten your child.

(4) The cost associated with standard pediatric care at the ER or hospital urgent care is extremely high. Often times, the cost of an ER visit or hospital urgent care visit is more than 3 times the cost of a House Call. Also the house call bill could be submitted to your insurance for reimburcement.

“By making House Calls I can deliver urgent care in a nurturing environment. ”

Is my baby having enough breast milk?
This is the most common question I get in my practice from new moms.
My Answer:
-If you are drinking 10 cups of water a day ( I recommend to drink 8 oz of water before each breast feeding that way you would have about 10 a day)
-If your baby is wetting 5 to 6 diapers a day
-If you baby gains 1 oz a day
then great you know you have enough milk for your baby.
Here is a video clip by Dr. Sears to tell you more. In the video clip note the color of stool and how soft and seedy it is also you may change a full diaper every time the baby eats in the first weeks of life.

We call this the gastro-colic reflex and its quite normal (its not diarrhea) and that would be the second common question I get is my baby having diarrhea when parents visit me the first week after the hospital)
Looking forward to get your feedback, experience and comments regarding breast feeding.
thanks and keep in touch

After-hours pediatric House Calls fills the void for the affluent families in Newport Beach and Newport Coast.

March 15th, 2009 | Comments (0)

Last week, one of the parents asked me: Why do I make House Calls?
I said: “During the last 20 years working as a Pediatrician, it never fails, that kids wait until 5:05 p.m. to sprain an ankle or show signs of ear infection.”
My goal is to provide an affordable alternative to expensive emergency room care for parents and their children. And at the same time, ensure that the children receive the same quality care they would from their primary care pediatrician. An emergency visit may cost close to a thousand dollars, plus your time wasted just sitting and waiting to be seen.

While I am committed to providing our patients with excellent urgent care after hours, I am also committed to providing their primary care pediatrician with excellent follow-up information. This is why so many pediatricians refer their own patients to us time and time again.
We’re open 365 days a year, after your regular pediatrician’s office is closed
