When parents tell me do we really have to buy organic?

I say you do the math and here are the stat? and you be the judge

• Allergy and Asthma: incidence has more than doubled.
• Cancer: after injuries, is the leading killer of children in the United States.
• Leukemia and Brain Cancer: have increased in incidence, brain cancer by nearly 40% over the past three decades.
• Developmental Disabilitiesand ADHD: Neuro-developmental dysfunction is now commonplace, with learning disabilities affecting anywhere from five to 10 percent of all children.
• Birth Defects: The incidence of Hypospadias, a birth defect of the reproductive organs in baby boys, has doubled.
• Autism: has jump 400 percent in the last 20 years to 1 in 150 children.
The increase in the incidence of childhood cancer alone is the first clue that something is going wrong. In fact, many chemical toxicants are known to contribute to causation of these diseases. They deserve special attention because most are preventable sources of harm. Children are at risk of exposure to over 15,000 high-production-volume synthetic chemicals, nearly all of them developed in the past 50 years. These chemicals are used widely in consumer and household goods like personal care products, cleaning supplies, pesticides, paints, toys, home furnishings, carpeting, electronics, plastics and even food and water.
More than half are untested for toxicity and affect on human health.

Acne

Acne is one of the world’s most common skin conditions, affecting over 85% of adolescents by the age of 24 years and up to 50% of adults over 25 years of age. Acne is a widespread and upsetting condition. It can produce lifelong physical and emotional scarring.

Acne vulgaris

Acne is NOT caused by bad diet or greasy foods. In fact, acne develops when the sebaceous glands in a person’s skin produces excess oil? (sebum). This oil combines with cells that line the gland walls and clogs the skin’s pores. Normal skin bacteria colonise these pores and the body’s response causes the inflammation or reddening of the skin that we associate with acne.

How does OmniluxTM light therapy work?

One of the key bacteria responsible for the inflammation is Propionibacterium acnes or P.acnes. These bacteria produce natural chemicals called poryphyrins, which are sensitive to light at different wavelengths. If stimulated, these chemicals will neutralise the bacteria and with no bacteria present inflammation will subside.

Omnilux blueTM stimulates these chemicals and so eradicates the bacteria that cause the redness or inflammation of acne. This is combined with Omnilux reviveTM which has anti inflammatory properties, this helps to minimise the redness of acne lesions and promotes healthier skin.

Omnilux treatments are totally non-invasive and generate no heat. The treatment does not damage normal tissue and works with the body’s own natural processes to rejuvenate the skin.

The Omnilux blueTM unit showing the array of light emitting diodes

How Omnilux Works

Why choose Omnilux combination light therapy for acne?

Omnilux is an essential tool as part of an acne management programme. OmniluxTM delivers pure light optimised to deliver the correct wavelength and dose for maximum activation of the target cells.

Combination phototherapy works through the anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory activity of Omnilux blueTM and Omnilux reviveTM delivered alternately. Only by delivering the right wavelength in sequence can optimum results be seen.

Activation of coproporphyrin III creates intracellular singlet oxygen – inducing complete bacterial death.

This reduces the bacterial colonisation of the sebaceous gland, returning the gland’s abnormally high level of sebum to normal and reducing the production of proinflammatory cytokines.

Simultaneously, Omnilux blueTM induces anti-inflammatory cytokines, stimulating specific immunoregulatory pathways.

The intracellular specificity of red light therapy (Omnilux reviveTM) is well documented and it has long been demonstrated that 633nm offers excellent reduction in inflammatory lesions and is proven to stimulate cellular mechanisms for tissue repair.

Clinical Efficacy

Omnilux blueTM for acne

In a recent study of 30 subjects, (skin types I-IV, all with mild to moderate acne vulgaris) every subject had a significantly successful treatment response. There was an optimum reduction in inflammatory lesions of 73% 4 to 8 weeks post treatment.

Before and after OmniluxTM therapy showing a 89% reduction in inflamed lesions, 12 weeks from the end of treatment.

OmniluxTM combination light therapy for acne

In a recent study 16 subjects (skin types I-IV, all with mild to moderate acne vulgaris or moderately severe cystic acne) were treated with alternate Omnilux blueTM and Omnilux reviveTM light therapy.

A mean clearance rate of over 82% was seen 12 weeks after the final treatment.

Before and after OmniluxTM combination therapy showing excellent reduction in inflamed and nodular lesions, 12 weeks from the end of treatment.

Treatment Protocol

Either 8 alternate Omnilux blueTM and Omnilux reviveTM or 8 Omnilux blueTM treatments over four weeks.
Allow At least 48 hours rest time between treatments.
Combination light therapy consists of alternate Omnilux blueTM and Omnilux reviveTM treatments

FAQs

What is OmniluxTM light therapy for acne?
Omnilux blueTM is a light source that is specially tuned to activate natural chemicals found in the bacteria that cause skin redness in acne. When stimulated, these chemicals destroy the bacteria. Omnilux reviveTM is used in combination with Omnilux blueTM. Omnilux reviveTM stimulates cells in your body that help with the healing process and reduce the inflammation surrounding the acne lesions

How safe is the treatment?
Omnilux blueTM and Omnilux reviveTM are safe and harmless to your skin and generate no heat. The light works naturally with your body to promote the healing response. The only safety measure is to wear goggles to protect your eyes from the light.

What results can be expected from a series of treatments?
Optimum results will be seen between 4-8 weeks after treatment. The light stimulates natural processes that continue after the treatment has stopped. Whilst studies have shown complete clearance of lesions, on average you should expect 70% of lesions to clear when using blue light alone and over 80% when using blue and red light together. We suggest that the treatment is used in conjunction with a preparation such as salicylic acid. Your advisor can discuss this combination treatment with you.

Before and after OmniluxTM therapy showing a 73% clearance 8 weeks after the last treatment

Are there any side effects from the treatments?
No. There have been no reported adverse side effects like redness or irritation from the treatment, and the light does not damage skin in any way.

Is it painful?
Not at all because there’s no heat involved, there’s no pain!

What actually happens during the treatment?
You will have to remove any makeup or sunblock before the treatment and you will also be asked to wear safety goggles. The light will then be positioned close to your face and you will be treated for 20 minutes. After that you’re free to go home.

Omnilux blueTM in action

The treatment course is usually 8 light treatments. Dependent upon your type of acne, you may be advised to use a face wash and a gel containing salicylic acid. These are both available from the OmniluxTM range of products and will help with the treatment.

OmniluxTM light therapy is the clear choice for acne

- Because there is no heat involved, there’s no pain!
- Eradicates the bacterium that causes acne through natural processes, so it won’t harm your skin
- Promotes your body’s natural healing response so the treatment continues long after the light has been switched off
- Highly effective, no side effects, no irritation
- Quick and simple.

My favorite food for babies after breast feeding for the first 6 months of life is:
Papaya
Avocado
Mixed vegetables: carrot, yam or sweet potato and spinach
Always mix with water or you can get creative and mix with beans or lentils water (soup) they are very rich in iron.
DO not mix with artificial juices that come in jars or bottles in the stores.
Enjoy your baby they will eat anything for you if you try long enough and don’t give up if they spit it up the first few times they are learning how to eat the more formed foods and remember that is not the same as sucking.
Please send your comments and share with us your experiences, looking forward to hear from you.

Dietary Changes to improve acne:
Although topical treatments may produce quick results, they often have side effects, may dry out the skin, and don’t address the root causes of acne. So, for a long-term strategy, it is better to treat acne from the inside out through dietary changes.

Since diet plays such a large part in acne problems, the first step to alleviate the problem is to make the necessary dietary changes. Without doing this, your chances of improvement are greatly reduced.

• A high-fiber diet of whole grain breads and cereals, bran, legumes (beans, lentils and split peas) and lots of fruits and vegetables is a good way to minimize eating the wrong foods. Often skin problems are rapidly improved when more fiber is added to the diet.

• Reduce your consumption of junk food and limit your total fat intake to no more than 20% of calories. Cut out hydrogenated oils.

• Eliminate sugars. Skin glucose tolerance is significantly impaired in acne patients and eliminate refined carbs.

• Drink 8 to 10 cups of water a day.

• Reduce (or eliminate) milk consumption. The hormones contained in milk can aggravate acne.

• Avoid chocolate, tea, and coffee.

• Avoid foods containing trans fatty acids.

• Avoid fried foods.

• Eliminate sodas and artificial sweeteners.

• Eat foods with zinc to get enough to satisfy the remedy listed below. Foods containing zinc include oysters, herring, wheat germ, sesame seeds, liver, soybeans, sunflower seeds, egg yolk and lamb.

These are some supplements that I recommend
Acidophilus Take acidophilus either in capsule or liquid form 2-3 times a day.

Brewer’s yeast tablets taken after every meal has worked for some people. It contains chromium which is an essential mineral involved in the processing of sugar. Take 2 teaspoons of brewer’s yeast daily.

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are composed of linoleic and linolenic fatty acids and should be taken to help reduce or eliminate inflammation. Individuals with acne are often deficient in these important nutrients. The omega 6 fatty acids are found in evening primrose oil (take 500 mg three times daily), black currant seed oil, and borage seed oil. A tablespoon of fish oil daily will be helpful. Pure cold-pressed flaxseed oil is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids you can add it to your cereal.

Vitamin A will help reduce sebum production and is important in maintaining healthy skin. Take 10-15,000 I.U. (not beta carotene) and 400 I.U. of vitamin D daily. For severe cases of acne you may need to increase the intake to 25,000 I.U., but do this only with medical supervision as it may cause side effects.

Vitamin B-complex Take a B-complex supplement daily.

Folic acid (a B vitamin) 10 mg daily, especially if your acne erupts at the outset of your menstrual cycle. Take along with B-6.

Vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) has been used successfully in China. Dosage is 10 grams daily (divided into 2.5 grams doses) plus a cream containing 20% pantothenic acid by weight, applied four to six times daily. After 2-3 days there was a dramatic decrease in the amount of oil secretion, and the acne was brought under control in a few weeks’ time. Severe cases needed 15-20 grams of pantothenic acid daily, and the time needed was up to six months.

Vitamin B6 will help restore normal hormone balance, especially testosterone and estrogen, which contribute to flareups. Take 50 mg three times per day. Women should start a week before menstruation and continue for a week afterward, as a minimum; daily would be preferable.

Vitamin C helps promote healing and cellular repair, enhances the immune system, and is beneficial for skin health in general. Start with 500 mg daily and increase to 1-3,000 mg or to bowel tolerance over a week or two.

Vitamin E boosts the effectiveness of certain enzymes (glutathione peroxidase) needed for good skin health and enhances the absorption of vitamin A. Take 400 IU per day. It is more effective when taken with selenium.

Zinc, an essential mineral, is more effective than antibiotics for wound healing, inflammation control, tissue regeneration and healthy skin in general. To see results you may have to take zinc for one to two months, and it should greatly reduce the recurrence of acne once the body chemistry is in balance. Zinc may be used topically or take 50 mg with each meal. Zinc picolinate is readily absorbed. If you don’t see any results after a month or so, increase the level to 100 or even 150 mg with each meal. You should have very positive results within three months. Many teenage diets are high in the junk food category, which is very low in zinc. I

Natural Remedies:

Aloe Use aloe vera juice or gel to counteract infection and promote healing. Use the ointment on pimples and sores. For acne scars, using aloe vera juice morning and night for as long as necessary (perhaps six months or longer) will help reduce the scars and improve skin complexion and color. It is drying, so if you have dry skin, use an aloe-based moisturizer. The pulp of the aloe vera plant is an excellent skin cleanser. Break off a portion and rub the pulp directly on the skin.

Apple cider vinegar/lemon juice Clean your skin and apply either lemon juice or apple cider vinegar with a cotton ball. The acid in these kitchen remedies helps flush out the pores and keeps the skin looking beautiful. Vinegar acts as an astringent and helps remove excess oil, kills bacteria, and normalizes the skin’s pH. This remedy should work quickly.

Basil For acne that hasn’t responded to other remedies, brew 2-3 teaspoons of dried basil leaves in 1 cup of boiling water for 20 minutes; let cool; apply to affected area with a cotton ball.

Carrot Juice The essential oils in carrot juice will aid digestion and help stop acne.

Cucumber Liquify a peeled cucumber in a blender and apply the juice to the acne. Another variation of this remedy is to drink four or five cups of cucumber juice daily for a week. This is said to purify the blood and lymphatic system, resulting in a clearer skin.

Grapefruit seed extract This extract is a powerful all-around antimicrobial product and is an excellent disinfectant. Make a solution of 4-40 drops in four ounces of water and apply to the affected areas with a cotton ball two or three times a day.

Neem oil Neem (Azadirachta indica) is valued in Ayurvedic medicine for its varied healing properties due to its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral capabilities. A cousin of mahogany, neem is a tropical evergreen tree native to India and Myanmar. Over 60 medicinal uses have been documented for neem so far – such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, cold sores, dandruff, athlete’s foot, ulcers, ringworm, and gingivitis, to name a few. For acne, apply a 2% neem oil-based cream to the affected area and take 2 neem leaf capsules daily to speed the healing. Neem oil may also be used by mixing 1 tablespoon of neem oil with 1/2 cup of a carrier oil such as almond or olive, and applying to the affected area with a Q-tip or cotton ball. If you have sensitive skin or if irritation occurs, dilute the neem with more of the carrier oil.

Oatmeal As for measles and other skin irritations, people have used oatmeal to conquer acne. Apply some cooled, cooked oatmeal to the whole face for fifteen minutes, then wash off. Oatmeal is an astringent and seems to draw oil and impurities out of the skin, keeping it clean and blemish-free. This method may take a week or two, but should have good results.

Oil of oregano Put a few drops in a glass of water and dab on the acne using a cotton ball. Oil of oregano is a very strong disinfectant, so if you start to get redness on your skin, stop using it for a few days then use a more diluted solution.

Sugar Wash your face and make a poultice of white sugar with a small amount of water; dab on the affected area. Sugar has an antibacterial effect.

Witch hazel In the morning wash your face with a gentle cleanser. If you have oily skin, rub a cottonball saturated with witch hazel over your entire face. It is an astringent and will help dry the skin and shrink the pimples. Next, spread a thin coat of a 2% salicylic acid product (found in drugstores) over your whole face. Its deep penetrating action will help unclog oil-clogged pores. Repeat the cleansing and witch hazel steps, then dab 2.5% benzoyl peroxide over the entire face to kill bacteria.

Herbal
Amaranth Make a tea from amaranth seeds and use as a face wash. To make the tea bring 3 cups of water to a rolling boil, add 2 teaspoons of seeds, cover and simmer for five minutes; remove from heat and add 1 teaspoon of leaves (if available) and steep for 30 minutes.

Basil To treat affected area, obtain a basil-based oil from your health food store and apply it as directed. Another way is to get the actual herb and make an infusion. To make an infusion, put two to four teaspoons of dried basil leaves in a cup of boiling water, steep for 10 to 20 minutes, cool, and apply to the acne.

Burdock The herb burdock (Arctium lappa), is effective in treating acne and is the most important herb for treating all forms of chronic skin problems. To make the tea, bring 1 quart of water to a boil, reduce to simmer, add 4 teaspoons of cut, dried root; cover and let simmer for 7 minutes, then remove from heat and let steep for 2 more hours. Use as a skin wash.

Calendula can be made into tinctures, lotions and creams. Look for products containing this herb. Make a tea of calendula and wash your face.

Oregon grape (Mahonia aquifolium) It has antibiotic properties and helps stimulate the immune system. Take one of the following three times daily: tea from dried root (2-4 grams); tincture (6-12 ml or 1.5-3 teaspoon); fluid extract (1-2 ml or 0.25-0.5 teaspoon); solid powder of 8-12% alkaloid content (250-500 mg.).

Tea There are several other herbs that can be made into a tea and taken internally or used as a wash. Besides aloe and burdock, calendula, chickweed, dandelion, red clover, white oak bark, yellow dock, cayenne, echinacea, ginseng, redmond clay, sarsaparilla, and valarian may be used.

Tea tree oil derived from the leaves of the native Australian Melaleuca alternifolia tree contains antiseptic compounds that are a very effective skin disinfectant. Depending on severity, use 5-15% solutions twice daily. It is as effective as 5% benzoyl peroxide and is less drying, although it may take a little longer to work.
By: Dr. Iman Bar
Understanding the Growing Teenage Trend
“Teens have a tendency to be overly sensitive about their hair growth, especially when it appears in a less desirable area of the body such as the face or arms. Girls are usually more sensitive about this than boys.” What can they do about it? Laser hair removal might be an option.
It can be difficult to deal with the potential embarrassment and anxiety brought on by unwanted body hair, but in the especially judgmental landscape of high school, such aesthetic imperfections can be even harder to come to terms with.

With the advances made in laser hair removal safety and effectiveness, the treatment is generally considered a completely viable option for teens. Whether it’s a teen girl hoping to get rid of unsightly facial hair, or a boy looking to shed body hair for the swim team, perma-nent laser hair removal is now a more popular solution than ever for teens that visit Dr. Bar’s Medical Practice.

How Laser Hair Removal Works for Teenagers
A teenager might not want to shave just yet, or use wax because these methods can encourage more rapid hair growth in a teen whose body is not fully mature. Laser hair removal is an option to consider, but should be decided by both the parent and the teen. All laser hair removal clinics require a parent’s consent to perform the pro-cedure on a child under 18 years of age.
Our Practice has the new laser technology the Coolglide, that produce a laser light to destroy hair follicles where the unwanted hair appears. The procedure is safe for teens, and definitely much less painful than waxing.
Having the procedure during a school holiday week or the summer months might be a good idea. Teens should also understand that several visits might be required to remove all the unwanted hair. Four visits are the average, but it might take more or less depending on the amount of hair that needs to be removed, and the color of the patient’s hair and skin. Treatments can cost anywhere from $120 on up per session. Most people need four-to-six sessions to completely remove hair.
Is Laser Hair Removal Safe for Teenagers?
Yes. In some cases, unwanted body hair appears as a result of hormonal changes that may or may not carry through into adulthood, so it’s imperative for any teen (and their parent) considering laser hair removal to schedule an in-depth consultation with Dr. Bar, to make sure the treatment is truly warranted.
Do Teenagers Experience the Same Laser Hair Removal Results as Adults?
When applicable, laser hair removal can work for teens as well as it does for anyone else. Also, because teenagers’ hair tends to re-grow at a faster rate than adults, teens may generally require more treatment sessions than adults.
Most common in teenagers, the bikini area in girls, and facial area in boys with acne, are regions of common occurring folliculitis, inflammation and infection of the hair follicles. Not only does this result in itchy and painful lesions, but fairly often secon-dary darkening of the skin from the inflammation. Fortunately, the laser has been very helpful in reducing, or eliminating, hair growth and diminishing, or stopping, re-current folliculitis.
“A successful treatment can help build confidence and provide a safe, simple way to get rid of unwanted hair. Whole parts of the body can be treated at once, it’s much quicker, the pain is minimal and now it is more af-fordable”.
Business Spotlight: ER at your Door 24/7

Last Year, Iman Bar found herself unexpectedly on call. The pediatrician, who operaters a clinic on Costa Mesa’s Westside, was at the birthday party of one of her children’s friends when a boy fell in the back yard and suffered a nasty cut to his head. The family was ready to drive him to the hospital, but as fate would have it, Dr. Bar had her emergency kit in the car and mended the wound promptly.

From that moment came a business idea. Dr. Bar, who has seen patients at her Harbor Boulevard office since 2000, began making house calls shortly after the party – and a year later, she still has her phone on her 24/7, ready for a summons.

“I thought, ‘I would like to serve my community by providing service in their homes, rather than have them wait in the ER,’” said Dr. Bar, a native Egyptian who moved to the United States in 1990.

Now, Dr. Bar’s business, Newport Concierge Pediatrics, extends across a five-mile redius around her residence in Newport Beach. She only gets one or two calls in a typical week, but she’s primed for almost any urgent care – including cuts, burns, bee stings, ear infections, and even advice on child care for nervous first-time parents.

Given her background, Dr. Bar isn’t overwhelmed by much. She worked as a pediatrician in Egypt before crossing the Atlantic to earn her doctorate at Emory University in Georgia. At one point, she said, she treated the prince of Kuwait when the royal family fled to Egypt during the Gulf War in 1990.

The experience reminded Dr. Bar – who now lives in Corona Del Mar – how all patients become alike in the doctor’s office.
